Where 49ers sit in 2021 draft order after loss to Cowboys – NBC Sports Bay Area

The 49ers began the 2020 NFL season with Super Bowl aspirations. They had no desire to pick in the top half of the 2021 draft.

But that’s where the 49ers are headed after a third straight loss on Sunday. After falling 41-33 to the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas, San Francisco officially was eliminated from NFC playoff contention when the Arizona Cardinals topped the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss to Dallas, the 49ers moved up to the No. 11 pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, according to But they slipped back down to No. 12 when the New York Giants lost to the Cleveland Browns on “Sunday Night Football.”

The 49ers are one of six teams with a 5-9 record, along with the Cowboys, Los Angeles Chargers, Giants, Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos.

The problem for the 49ers is that the Cowboys, Chargers, Giants and Lions all have a worse strength of schedule, meaning they have a higher pick than the 49ers.

If you’re hoping the 49ers end up with a top-10 draft pick, you’re in luck. They play the Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks to close out the 2020 season, and both teams are fighting for playoff positioning, meaning they will be heavily invested in trying to beat San Francisco.

While the 2020 season hasn’t gone the way coach Kyle Shanahan and his players had hoped, the silver lining is that they will get to add a top prospect to a talented squad that should be healthier next season.
