Defiant Doug Marrone gives Jets glimmer of Trevor Lawrence hope – New York Post

After the Jaguars leapfrogged the Jets in the race for the right to draft Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville head coach Doug Marrone was pressed about how he’ll approach the final two games of the season with the franchise’s future on the line.

“Well, I mean no one’s advised me anything different than to go out there and win,” Marrone told reporters Monday, the day after the Jaguars lost their 13th-straight game.

“I understand I guess from a standpoint of I was young growing up and had a favorite team and was excited to see where they were going to pick. So, it’s not something that I don’t look back and I understand.

“But Jesus, we’re trying to win. We’re doing everything we possibly can and that’s my job right now and I owe it to the coaches and players. None of us are going to look at this and the future. No one knows what’s going to happen tomorrow never mind at the end of the year…I can understand [the question] though, but that’s not the way we think, myself, player. We’re just too competitive.”

The Jaguars won their opener against the Colts but have yet to pick up a victory since. They have threatened to upset contenders recently, losing tight matchups to the Packers, Browns and Vikings. But they have been outscored 71-24 in their past two losses to the Titans and Ravens.

They finish their season at home against the Bears and then at Indianapolis. The Jaguars fired GM Dave Caldwell last month and there is rampant speculation Marrone will be let go after the season.

After the Jets upset of the Rams, they are tied with the Jaguars for the worst record in the league. However, Jacksonville owns the strength of schedule tie-breaker.

Marrone was asked if he’s ever been asked to lose.

“I wouldn’t do that. I couldn’t do it. I just wouldn’t,” Marrone, who is in his sixth year with the Jaguars, said. “I’ve never done that with anything in my life. I had trouble letting my kids win when they were little.”
